How to find a sublet fast in NYC
The fastest way to find a sublet in New York is to search with exact dates and a hard budget, limit yourself to two or three neighbourhoods on the subway line you will use every day, set up a search alert so a matching listing reaches you the day it posts, and reply to new listings within hours with a short message that says who you are, your dates and when you can view. Good listings in June, August and September are taken within a week of posting.

Day 1: dates, budget, line
Decide your move-in date and either an end date or "month to month". Set a monthly budget that includes utilities and internet if they are not included. Then choose the subway line that reaches your office, campus or hospital in under 30 minutes and pick two or three neighbourhoods on it; the neighbourhood pages show how many listings each has right now and what they ask.
Day 1: set the alert, then search
Set up a search alert with your dates, budget and neighbourhoods; new listings that match are emailed the day they post, which is where speed comes from. Then browse with the same filters and message every listing that fits, not only the best one.
The message that gets a reply
Three sentences: who you are and what brings you to the city, your exact dates and that the price works, and when you can view (today or tomorrow, in person or by video). Listers reply to people who sound real and ready; "is this still available?" gets ignored.
Days 2 to 5: view, check, sign
View in person or on a live video call, do the three checks from the scam guide, and ask for the agreement the same day. Have your deposit and first month ready to pay on signing by a traceable method. If a place is right, decide on the spot; the next person will.
If nothing fits
Widen one thing at a time: a neighbourhood one stop further out, a private room instead of a studio, a start date a week later. The duration pages (summer, month-to-month, one month) and the guides for interns, students and travel nurses list the listings that fit those shapes directly.
